Make the Most of Change: Part 5

Make the Most of Change: Part 5

Here we are – the final post in the Make the Most of Change Series. Catch up on Parts One, Two, Three, and Four of the series if you missed them. Today I’m wrapping up with my final Tip Seven on approaching change with a positive mindset.

Tip Seven: View change as an opportunity.

Whether change is desired or not, it presents us with an opportunity to make the most of our lives. Your mindset matters; it either holds you back from possibilities or opens up new opportunities.

In career development terms, you have a chance to hit the pause button and take stock of your purpose– what gives you meaning, what you value – and take time to realign your work to jive with living a life of greater purpose.

While you’re busy steering your transition toward a new balance, don’t forget to practice self-care. It’s more difficult to stay open-minded and positive about change if your basic needs are not being met. Now is not the time to play into the female martyr stereotype. Even if you have only ten minutes a day for self-care, you can use that short time to reduce stress and anxiety, while improving your focus and creativity. Here are a few ten minute self-care ideas:

  • Find a ten minute yoga sequence on YouTube to incorporate into your morning routine.

  • Search for a ten minute meditation on SoundCloud or check out an app such as Headspace and work meditation into your daily lunch break (learn about the science behind mediation and how it benefits your health here).

  • Take a ten minute walk in a green space after work to boost your mood.

  • Pick up a new notebook and spend ten minutes journaling at the end of your day.

Ten minutes a day of self-care can go a long way in keeping you grounded and optimistic.

Transitions are a time for self-renewal. In the end, you’ll recognize your transition gave you a chance to hone your aptitude for managing change – a highly regarded trait in today’s labour market. Above all, you’ll be starting your new beginning!
