Boost Your Career this Season
Autumn is my favourite season. I love the feeling of change in the air as the leaves turn golden yellow and it becomes time to pull out cozy sweaters. As the first full week of autumn draws to an end, today’s post celebrates this special time of year.
Like the dash of cinnamon on your chai latte, these four tips will help spice up your work life as the temperature begins to drop.
1. Set End of Year Goals
There are three months to go before we welcome 2017! Take stock of where you wanted to be in your career by year-end and set a few manageable goals to tackle within the next three months. If you haven't checked it out yet, get your copy of Shift’s Mini-Goals Worksheet to learn how to set effective goals.
2. Engage Your Network
Invite a colleague to catch up over a couple of pumpkin spice lattes. Most people let their contacts go cold when they’re not looking for work, but there is no greater time to build and nurture your network than when you are gainfully employed. Connecting with a colleague you’ve been out of touch with can give you a boost, even if you're not looking for a favour right now. In the future when you need to reach out again you’ll have a stronger relationship to lean on.
3. Make the Most of Your Leisure Time
This autumn spend an hour a week on a hobby that makes your soul happy. Don’t fall victim to the career myth that your job is going to meet all of your needs. It’s like a relationship – although you aim for a certain level of compatibility with your partner, you wouldn’t expect your partner to meet every single social need you have. That’s why you also have friends and family. The various people in your life all contribute something unique to your social life. Your career is the same. Aim for compatibility with your job and fill your life with additional activities that meet your needs. Having a hobby is a key part of pursuing an authentic career that feels complete. Perhaps you are longing to do something creative, or you crave more time moving your body or working with your hands. Pursue a hobby that fulfills you, so that you can bring your best professional self to your job.
4. Explore New Opportunities (Job Resignation Not Required)
You don’t need to quit your job to add new life to your career. Explore new opportunities within your current work situation. Think about your strengths and how you can contribute them to your company in a new way. Speak with your colleagues to find out about upcoming projects and see if anything sounds interesting. Meet with your manager to express your desire to take on new responsibilities or projects. Make your manager your ally by asking for help exploring ways you can grow within your company and be prepared to offer suggestions for what you want to contribute to your team. Finding a new challenge in your current role will give you a chance to stretch your skills, grow, and stay engaged at work.
I hope these four tips give you some ideas on how to add a little extra zest to your career this autumn. Enjoy the new season ahead!
